This time of year, individuals, small businesses and major corporations all around the world are recognizing Earth Day.  Around here, it's just another day.

You see, the Affordable Homes Group began going green years ago.  It started with trying to recycle as much and as often as possible in the properties that we own and manage, in addition to our office building.  Then we began using compact fluorescent light bulbs everywhere possible in the 80+ residential units we operate.  (This move was, admittedly, as much about saving on electricity costs as it was about the environment.  But hey, going green can financially benefit us all.)  We then started to install high energy-efficiency systems in our own properties as well as those we renovate for resale.  As we continued, we learned more and more about earth-friendly, green building materials and started to incorporate them, as well.

In 2004 we began our first green renovation project.  The next year we built our first state-of-the-art green home, complete with an active photovoltaic solar roofing system and passive solar energy design.  In these projects, we also began using as many green building materials as possible - from recycled steel and styrofoam wall panels to gorgeous bamboo flooring.  We have also added modular housing projects to our list, a preferred green construction method to stick-built, site-built homes.

After building and renovating green homes for families, we decided that it was time to make our office a bit greener.  Starting April 17th, our building is getting a makeover, complete with new Hardiplank siding and a photovoltaic solar roofing system.  You can follow our progress here.

The next time you're in Mt. Holly, we welcome you to stop by and take a look at how sharp and cutting-edge green can be.  Just don't drop your recycling into the trash bin on your way out.  The boss around here is known to give a friendly lecture on recyclable goods every now and again.
