About Home Start Home Start, Inc. was started in 1996 by The Salt & Light Company to help future homeowners learn about the buying process and gain access to affordable loan and grant programs. Our company had spent the last decade helping to house homeless individuals and families, and later began to develop affordable units for those who could successfully become renters. (Learn more about the history of our organization.) As many of our renters began to look toward their next goal - homeownership - we knew it was time to do something.
There was a great need in Burlington County for pre-purchase education for first time homebuyers, so we developed a program to train low and moderate-income families how to become successful homeowners. Over the past ten years we have trained hundreds of individuals and families - many of whom now own homes of their own.
Today, Home Start provides pre-purchase counseling and education services to buyers in the Burlington County area and beyond. We help individuals and families who are trying to become qualified to purchase a home, and work step-by-step through the buying process toward the final goal of homeownership. We are a Fannie Mae approved counseling agency, and so our education certificate qualifies buyers for a number of loan and grant opportunities to help with their purchase.
If you are thinking about buying a home for the first (or even second or third!) time, we welcome you to attend our homebuyer education classes. You will learn valuable information and tools that will help you throughout the purchase process. Educated buyers are stronger buyers, and it is important that you can show it. Special lending and grant opportunities are offered to those obtaining a homebuyer education, and can often make the difference between a person who falls short of qualifying to purchase and a person who becomes a successful homeowner. If you are interested in finding out more information about our program, please explore our website to learn more about our program. You may also obtain a copy of our most recent publication and be added to our mailing list to receive future publications by e-mailing or calling us with your information. We encourage you to attend one of our Open Door to Homeownership meetings, where we discuss our services and help to answer questions you may have.
